Government warned off water plan changes 26 Feb 2008
Farmers have told the federal government not to mess with the $10 billion rescue plan for the Murray-Darling basin and to ignore those urging dramatic cuts to irrigation licences. The chairman of the National Farmers Federation water taskforce, Laurie Arthur, said that if the government forced cuts to water entitlements it would lose the support of irrigators. According to Mr Arthur the NFF believes that it is counterproductive to use compulsory acquisition and the government should enter the market in a way that does not create major distortions.
