Live exports necessary: ABARE
28 Feb 2008

The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics has warned that attempting to restrict live exports in response to public concerns about the practice could jeopardise farm incomes in the north and west of Australia. The bureau's executive director said that a lack of refrigeration in parts of South-East Asia, along with cultural and religious practices, meant that cuts could not replace live exports. While the Labor government had signalled its intention to consider closing down the industry before the election, the Agriculture Minister, Tony Burke, has since indicated that it will not bow to public pressure to end the practice.
