Tables turned on AWB 26 Mar 2008
Bulk grain handlers have rubbished AWB's concerns that the government's planned changes for deregulating wheat exports will allow them to become regional monopolies. GrainCorp chairman Don Taylor said that it was ironic that a company which operated in a monopolistic way when it ran the single desk should be concerned. Mr Taylor said that his company's track record when exporting other grains shows that they have not behaved in that way and that AWB's proposals would impose extra costs and regulations on growers. West Australian based CBH chairman Tony Critch said the draft bill already guarantees fair access and will be monitored by the government initially and then the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
