Murray-Darling plan gets green light
27 Mar 2008

After 14 months of delays the state governments have reached agreement to hand control of the Murray-Darling river system to the federal government. Victoria had been holding out against the deal but has agreed to a modified plan which includes $1 billion in grants to help the state improve its irrigation infrastructure. The existing South Australian Murray-darling Basin Authority and the Murray-darling Basin Commission will be merged to form a new body that will control water allocations throughout the basin, liaising with all affected states and territories and giving human water needs a priority. Victorian Premier John Brumby said that the deal will deliver more water to South Australia while securing the future of farmers.
