Opposition says water plan won't work 28 Mar 2008
The federal opposition says that the agreed plan for the Murray-Darling system has been watered down so much that it will not be effective. Liberal leader Brendan Nelson said that it has ended up being a complex and tenuous agreement that will take at least 18 months to implement and require significant co-operation from the states. "Australia's water supply in the Murray-Darling basin is far too important for there not to be complete commonwealth control. What is needed is immediate action, commonwealth control and, importantly, having all of the states fully supportive of it," he said. Under the approved plan state governments will have the right to send back for further review aspects of the plan and will keep control over water allocation within their borders.
