Protection on the rise 4 Apr 2008
In a recent report the Productivity Commission estimates that Australian farmers receive subsidies to the effect of 6% of their income. Subsidies vary, with dairy farmers being the biggest recipients effectively taking over $15 for every $100 of value. However the biggest finding from the Productivity Commission report was that since the drought, farming has overtaken manufacturing as the most subsidised sector in the Australian economy. Manufacturing has fallen from over 5% to 4.5%. Australia however compares well against other major trading economies with the US providing an average of 14%, Europe 32% and Japan 55%.
