Water buyback under pressure 11 Apr 2008
Murray Irrigation Ltd is currently resisting Federal government pressure to buyback water licences. The company's decision to place a levy increasing water costs by about 40% is in response to fears that the company will have increased maintenance costs as a result of the permanent loss of water. Other irrigators are concerned that they are being charged to effectively leave the industry and have warned that the ACCC might become involved as the exit fees might be seen as a barrier to trade. The ACCC is currently developing a set of water trading rules, however in response Murray irrigators believe that according to their legal advice the termination charges complied with ACCC directives.
