Climate conditions force drought relief review
24 Apr 2008

The Australian Government will review its drought assistance program to make sure it reflects the impact of climate change. The 23 April 2008 announcement stated that a new system will be in place by July 2009. Previous reviews recommended a reduction in interest-rate subsidies for the agricultural sector, but this was not implemented. The new review will look at the scientific, social and economic elements of drought support. The critical factor in any review and support program remains an adequate level of rainfall.
