Water buy-backs too slow to save Murray

The Rudd government's plan to spend $3 billion on 1500 gigalitres to improve the health of the Murray-Darling system has been criticised by University of Adelaide professor Mike Young. The voluntary buy-back system could take 10 years to achieve its target which Professor Young says risks not being fast enough to prevent damage to the river system. "I hope 10 years is not too long, but I fear that it is," he said. Richard Wheaton, an onion grower at the bottom of the Murray in South Australia, said that the plan seemed like a good idea to improve salinity and water levels but he is concerned about delays before the project is implemented as well as the effect that having such a big buyer in the market would push prices higher.
