Nats fight closure of single desk 30 Apr 2008
The rift between the Liberals and Nationals over wheat export policy is expected to split the coalition today as the Nationals are understood to have prepared a paper opposing the abolition of the single-desk arrangements to be presented at a senate committee hearing. Liberal senators have been generally supportive of the deregulation plans in committee hearings so far, expressing their frustration with growers who oppose the change outright and have been unwilling to talk about how it could be improved. The committee's report is due to be completed today and Labor wants legislation passed before the end of June.
