Grain handlers must be open 14 May 2008
Bulk grain handlers will face increased scrutiny from the competition regulator to ensure that third parties have access to their silos. The Agriculture Minister Tony Burke will ask the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission if it should have a role to play in monitoring the access to rural silos and receival sites. "There's no doubt there's a clear expectation we do something up-country," he said. He went on to say that any amendments to ensure protection would be done in a way that does not tie the system up in red tape. The draft bill required grain handlers such as CBH Group, ABB Grain and Graincorp to provide fair access to their ports.
