Queensland firies struggling 16 May 2008
Poor management, training and the age of volunteers means that the Queensland Rural Fire Service is at risk of becoming unsustainable. A report to the state's government says that while the service is still "effectively" managing fires, there was insufficient strategic planning, financial accountability, resourcing, training and health and safety measures. The report estimates that only 35 per cent of the active volunteer firefighters have completed basic training and said that some first equipment and first aid kits are past their expiry date.
