Liberals and Nationals flirt with marriage proposal 26 May 2008
The Liberal and National parties in Queensland could soon be one with the federal offices of both giving their consent for a binding ballot of Liberal members to be held in the next few days. There are many within both parties who believe that if the Queensland merger is a success a merger at the national level could proceed. A vote by the state's Nationals members conducted in April showed that 97.3 per cent of the 60 per cent that voted were in favour of a merger. Liberals have so far resisted the idea of joining forces but advocates within the party say that it may be their only chance of winning power, having only held the state for two-and-a-half of the last 19 years.
