Farmers losing rights to stop mining
27 May 2008

Farmers in NSW face losing the right to protect their houses if a mining company is given permission to dig under their land. Ian McDonald is both the Primary Industries and Mineral Resources Ministers for the state and the Mining Act requires the minister for mineral resources to refuse mining leases where there are houses or other improvements on the land unless the owner has given written consent. However Mr McDonald has told a court that he is happy to relinquish his power to protect the homes and orchards of farmers. Opposition primary industries spokesman Andrew Fraser said that a minister wearing two hats has sold out the interests of farmers in favour of the big end of town.
