WA holds line on GM ban 3 Jun 2008
The Western Australia government is standing firm in its opposition to the use of GM crops. The state Premier Alan Carpenter and Agriculture Minister Kim Chance said yesterday that independent trials should be conducted to determine the safety of genetically modified foods as well as enforcement of better labelling. Mr Chance said that it was unlikely that the Labor government would relax its ban on GM crops if re-elected while Mr Carpenter said that he found it unbelievable and unacceptable that the national food regulator relied on the word of GM companies that their products are safe to eat.
