Coalition divided over wheat exports 4 Jun 2008
The Liberals and Nationals are expected to split when voting on legislation to deregulate wheat export activities. Opposition leader Brendan Nelson is understood to have said that the two parties should agree to disagree on the issue but that the difference should not be a serious threat to the Coalition. The Liberals support deregulation while the Nationals remain convinced that a single desk is better for farmers. The Liberals will propose amendments to increase regulation of the major grain handling companies that own port terminals but will support deregulation with or without the changes.
