NSW not deterred from biofuel plans 6 Jun 2008
While international concern is building about the viability of biofuels, the NSW government is pressing ahead with plans to introduce a 2 per cent biodiesel mandate from October and to double the current ethanol mandate for petrol to 4 per cent next year. NSW is the only state to introduce such mandates, but Queensland has said that it will have a 5 per cent mandate by 2010. A UN crisis summit this week heard that biofuels are replacing food crop production causing shortages, and large areas of rainforest in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia are being cleared for oil palms which will be used for biodiesel.
