Varroa destructor mite gets closer 18 Jun 2008
The Varroa destructor mite could devastate Australia's honey-bee populations with dire consequences for agriculture which relies on feral and bees for pollination. The mite was detected in Papua New Guinea 11 days ago. The honey industry says it could cost agriculture $1.7 billion in the first 12 months and up to $6 billion and 11,000 jobs in the longer term. A parliamentary committee has recommended a new bee quarantine facility and national research centre.
