River inflows the lowest on record 11 Jul 2008
June inflows into the Murray Darling river system were the lowest on record with just 95 gigalitres entering the rivers. The CEO of the Murray Darling Basin Commission said the situation was critical and the rivers akin to a patient on life support. She said planned water buybacks and releases from Menindee and Cubbie Station in Queensland would evaporate before reaching the critically endangered lakes in South Australia. The Queensland government is planning to issue $100 million in water licenses to Cubbie Station, which has 200,000 megalitres in storage. The recent Sustainable Rivers Audit, has found just one of the basin''s 23 river valleys in good health. Seven were rated poor and 13 very poor. Some farmers are angry about managed investment schemes, which in Victoria account for 30,000ha of planting using 300 gigalitres of water, which is set to double.
