Fruit and vegie prices plummet
11 Jul 2008

Lower demand from stretched consumers and good weather has led to an oversupply of fruit and vegetables and lower prices for farmers. Oranges, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce are now selling at near *or* below cost price. NSW prices are being depressed by an abundance of oranges, mandarins, lemons and tomatoes from Queensland say industry lobbyists. Some crops were being left to rot *or* ploughed back in because prices are too low to harvest said a grower from Tasmania. Average farm gate prices had plummeted over the last two years from 50 per cent of retail to around 20 per cent of retail prices said a Queensland grower.
