Tariff cuts look bigger on paper 23 Jul 2008
Average global tariffs on farm produce would fall from 14.5 per cent to 11 per cent under a Doha round trade agreement says the World Bank. The WTO Doha round proposes to cut bound tariffs on agriculture but not actual tariffs, meaning cuts to protection levels could be a lot less than the agreement seems to envisage. Rich countries may agree to reduce farm tariffs from 32 per cent to 20 per cent, however actual tariffs are just 15 per cent and so will probably fall just slightly to 11 per cent. Developing countries will mostly avoid having to make tariffs cuts on agricultural produce.
