Tax breaks for trees on the agenda 25 Jul 2008
Farmers and big private landowners will benefit from tax breaks for carbon sinks says the National Association of Forest industries. A senate committee is currently reviewing tax issues around forestry carbon sinks. Currently it is unclear whether forestry plantations will be eligible for a tax break while the agriculture sector is not included in the emissions trading scheme. Farmers and the Greens have opposed the tax break fearing it would lead to land being locked up. The government''s green paper on climate change proposes an opt-in to the emissions trading scheme arrangement for forestry.
