Pacific workers scheme to be announced soon

The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is expected to announce a trial pacific islands guest worker scheme at the Pacific Islands forum in Niue later this month. The scheme is expected to fill labour shortages in the agriculture and horticultural industries. Building union CFMEU is strongly opposed to the plan whilst the Australian Workers Union has backed the idea. The AWU has insisted that all workers be paid award wages and superannuation plus relevant loadings.
