Victorian mutton dressed as lamb
4 Aug 2008

The Swan Hill Abattoirs has lost its authorisation to use the lamb and hogget brands said PrimeSafe, the Victorian Government watchdog on meat processing. The loss of the license related to quality assurance systems rather than any suggestion of fraud. The loss of the lamb license at Swab Hill comes after the Nathalia abattoir matter, where an alleged breach of lamb labelling laws had been referred to a police investigation. Swan Hill Abattoirs said they were hopeful of having the licence back this week. The Nathalia and Swan Hill lamb licence issues follow allegations by NSW processors of substitution of hogget for lamb in Victoria were made to the Senate inquiry into meat marketing.
