Government water buy back insignificant
5 Aug 2008

The federal government''s water license buyback scheme will return ten megalitres to the Murray/Darling system this year. The Government estimated the buyback would provide, on average, 23,808 megalitres to the environment each year. The Wentworth Group said the amount returned to the river was insignificant and that the government bought the cheapest water licenses it could find. Forty per cent of the water the federal Government has bought back is in the Lachlan, Macquarie and Gwydir rivers and is currently effectively airspace in dams. The lobby group said the government''s $3 billion fund should be spent in one big purchase to water entitlements.
