Farm gate prices reflect competitive market
6 Aug 2008

Coles and Woolworths do not unfairly pressure farmers into accepting low prices says the ACCC after its enquiry into grocery prices was released yesterday. Farm gate prices typically reflect competitive market conditions said the ACCC. The competition regulator said Coles and Woolworths controlled 50 per cent of the fresh produce market, compared with 70 per cent of packaged goods. Coles and Woolworths have strong market power but farmers had the option to selling to others, including export markets and wholesalers said the ACCC report.
