Farmers fight miners
6 Aug 2008

Farmers near Gunnedah are continuing to blockade BHP Billiton''s exploration for coal in the area. BHP yesterday said it would restrict its search to ridge country surrounding the Liverpool Plains, some of Australia''s richest farmland. Farmers say BHP''s bore holes are contaminating ground water which makes the region''s soils rich. The Government has received a bid of $600 million from the China Shenhua Energy Company for an exploration license in the Liverpool Plains, as well as bids from BHP Billiton, Xstrata and other mining companies.
