Queensland farmers reduce run-off
8 Aug 2008

The federal government has announced funding for farmers to reduce nutrients, chemicals and sediments leaving their lands. The minister for agriculture, Tony Burke said the $23 million allocation - part of a five-year, $200 million reef rescue plan - would improve reef water quality along the central and north Queensland coast. Cape York catchments will receive up to $1 million, the Fitzroy Basin and Burnett-Mary will receive up to $4 million each, the Terrain, Burdekin, Dry Tropics and Mackay Whitsunday regions up to $7 million each. The minister said the environmental work farmers did was largely unrecognised.
