NSW quietly gives water to irrigators 11 Aug 2008
NSW irrigators on the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers who hold high security water licenses have been granted use of 25 per cent of their annual allocation as a result of upstream rains. Victorian and South Australian high security license holders remain on zero allocation. The move by the NSW government comes as calls grow for water to be released to save The Coorong and lower reaches of the Murray River in South Australia. 45 gigalitres will be released in total to irrigators in NSW out of a total high security holding in NSW of 180 gigalitres. Stock and domestic license holders will remain on 50 per cent allocation. Victorian irrigators hold 1,250 gigalitres in high security licenses but require a minimum allocation of 225 gigalitres to operate gravity irrigation systems.
