Irrigators reject water buyback
14 Aug 2008

The plan to buy cotton properties with water licenses along the Darling River and returning the water to the river has not received support from the minister for water Penny Wong. Murray Darling Basin Commission says there would be 80 per cent of the water loss from seepage and evaporation before it reached Lakes Alexandrina and Albert. 300 gigalitres is needed to bring the lower lakes back up to sea level with more needed over summer. 810 gigalitres is in private storages in the upper reaches of the river and another 4800 in public storages. Irrigators say the plan is a waste of money.
