Compulsory acquisition of water needed now
18 Aug 2008

All North Victoria irrigators are on zero per cent water entitlements. South Australian farmers are on 6 per cent entitlements whilst NSW farmers on Murrumbidgee high security licenses are on 40 per cent of their allocations. Across the board cuts to water entitlements are required if the Murray River is to be saved say scientists. South Australian independent senator Nick Xenephon said he supported compulsory acquisition of water rights along the Murray. The Rudd government wants to step up its acquisition program, but has said it will only buy from willing sellers.
