Trees worth more than wood 3 Sep 2008
The proposed emissions trading scheme could result in forestry plantations being left in the ground and loggers turning to old growth forests instead. That would undermine the competitiveness of the industry and could result in the release of additional carbon emissions according to a report from the Australian National University. Professor Ross Garnaut is preparing to release the critical 2020 targets for greenhouse gas reduction this Friday. Once the carbon price reaches $14 per tonne, which is at the low end of expectations, trees will be worth more in the ground than as wood.
