Murray needs downsizing
8 Sep 2008

The Murray Darling River system needs to be downsized with some important irrigation and wetland areas cut off from the main river flows says Australia''s leading water economist Professor Mike Young. Young says the river system is currently operating on about half of the flow much of the infrastructure is designed for. Evaporation from the system now equals total inflows. South Australia has already closed off 33 wetlands including Banrock Station. The lower lakes near the Murray mouth are still well below sea level, but have recovered slightly in recent weeks thanks to rainfall.
