10 Sep 2008

More than one third of all packaged ham sold in supermarkets contains twenty per cent *or* more water according to tests carried out by a consumer group. Woolworths Deli Leg ham has the least amount of meat and the most water said Choice. A 100 gram pack contained 53 per cent meat and 39 per cent water. Primo Low Salt Leg Ham Shaved contained 23 per cent water and charged 79 cents for that water said the consumer lobby group. Of 49 types of packaged ham, most contained chemicals added to retain water including phosphate.
