Queensland releases water
12 Sep 2008

Queensland premier Anna Bligh said yesterday that the Queensland government had decided to gift 11 billion litres of water in the Darling system to the commonwealth for environmental purposes. The Queensland Department of Natural Resources has been instructed to release the water immediately said Bligh. The gift follows the buy back of the 91,000 Ha Toorale station and its water licenses on the Warrego river at the junction with the Darling River near Bourke in north western NSW. Local business groups and the Bourke shire council claim the purchase will cripple the local economy.
