Many grain growers and investing in on-farm storages in response to the deregulated grain markets. Graincorp said farmers were duplicating existing facilities and exposing themselves to infestation risks from weevils and other pests. There is currently 35 million tonnes of storage capacity in the eastern states said Graincorp, well in excess of the 17 – 18 million tonne average harvest. An analyst said Graincorp received 70 per cent of its average annual income from storage fees.
