NSW irrigators boycott water bills
7 Oct 2008

Southern Riverina irrigators are asking the NSW government to waive fixed infrastructure charges for this year. The irrigators don''t want to pay their annual fixed bills of $15,000 - $20,000 charged by the government for maintenance of water infrastructure because they have not been allocated water for the summer for the third year in a row. Winter crops have failed in the southern NSW region due to ingoing dry conditions. Farmers groups are calling on irrigators to support a boycott of the fixed water charges. The NSW water minister said farmers who did not pay their bills were breaking the law.
