Crop forecasts slashed
8 Oct 2008

The NAB national wheat crop forecast has been cut back by 3.5 million tonnes to 20.8 million tonnes as a result of a dry spring in Victoria and Southern NSW. Barley growers are expected to deliver 7.4 million tonnes this season with the canola crop expected to produce 1.3 million tonnes. The harvest in Wimmera, Mallee and North East Victoria are expected to be well below the long-term average. There has been widespread crop failure in the Riverina, particularly around the Oaklands and Urana area, with many crops not expected to yield more than 1.2 tonnes/ha. 25 mm of rain in the Western Australian wheat belt in September has helped that crop hold up. Harvesting began in WA last week. CBH said it expects 10-12 million tonnes from all grain crops in WA.
