Free range farmers want inquiry into egg substitution 10 Oct 2008
The free-range egg industry is calling on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to conduct an inquiry into the substitution of cage and barn eggs for free range. Farm Pride general manager Zelko Lendic said there is an imbalance between the reported numbers of free range hens and the amount of free range eggs on supermarket shelves. The Free range farmers association said cage and free range produce should not be allowed to be produced from the same farm as it creates easy opportunities for substitution. The Free Range Poultry Association Queensland said the issue had been pushed under the carpet and said they had been trying for two years to get the ACCC to act on the issue.
