Markets fiasco threatens Victorian agriculture 16 Oct 2008
Victoria''s eight billion dollar agricultural industry is threatened by the delay and confusion surrounding the development of markets in Melbourne. The one billion dollar new fruit and vegetable markets project in Melbourne is under threat of collapse as developer Mirvac refuses to sign a contract with Victoria Fresh Markets. The new markets complex at Epping in the city''s northern outskirts was to replace the ageing markets complex in inner city Footscray. Mirvac''s share price has fallen 65 per cent in the last year and the developer is believed to have been crippled by events surrounding the global financial crisis. The state government has allocated $300 million to the project. The agricultural minister said yesterday he expected the project to proceed on schedule.
