Irrigators want buy back speeded up
20 Oct 2008

The 230 farmers in the Wakool Landholders Association have asked the federal government to make a bid to buy back the community''s bulk water license and close all supply channels. The community is the first to offer to exit irrigation en-masse. Wakool has received just one per cent of its water allocation of 330,000 megalitres this year for their 230,000 hectares of irrigated agriculture. The 1,000 member South Australian Murray Irrigators association has urged the government to speed up purchasing water licenses from the current ten year time frame to just three months. SAMI says the government should be considering paying double the market price for the water licenses.
