Wool industry split over mulesing solutions
21 Oct 2008

A senate committee has heard that Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) is governed by a board that cannot work together and is riven by disunity and dysfunctional relationships. AWI chairman Brian van Rooyen denied the board was dysfunctional. "On 90 plus per cent of the issues that the board considers, we have consensus agreement and we get on with the business of trying to get the demand up and the price up for Australian wool growers," he told the senate committee. Board disagreements are said to relate to disagreements over mulesing, conflicts of interest and "agri-political" arguments. Mr van Rooyen said there had been instances of board members speaking inappropriately to the media and these comments being used by animal rights activists against the industry. But the comments were not distracting ongoing research into wool innovation, Mr van Rooyen said. The Australian Wool Growers Association (AWGA) favours a pharmaceutical solution to mulesing while AWI favours the use of clips.
