Shires declare themselves GM free zones
22 Oct 2008

Greater Bendigo, Yarra Ranges, South Gippsland, Moreland, East Gippsland and Bass Coast Shires in Victoria have declared themselves GM free, following the government lifting the ban on genetically modified canola earlier this year. However the state government has refused to support the declarations. A spokesperson said the Government supported giving Victorian farmers choice on the crops they grew. Yarra Ranges shire councillor Samantha Dunn said the Government could declare shires GM-free zones under the federal GM act. "We have a large agriculture sector and we see clean and green practices as a way of marketing our shire," she said. Anti-GM lobby group GeneEthics, said while the councils could not stop GM grain being planted, the declaration sent a strong message.
