Locusts swarm in Riverina and northern Victoria
23 Oct 2008

Above-average cereal crops in the eastern and southern Riverina are at risk of locust damage. Almost 800 landholders in southern NSW have reported plague locust swarms, with the area around Wagga Wagga the worst affected. Last week hatchings doubled amid mild spring weather with 300 reports in the Wagga area. Narrandera, Gundagai, Hume and Murray rural land protection board areas are also affected as are 37 sites in the northern Victoria irrigation region. Swarms up to 24 kilometres long have been reported in Temora, Coolamon, Ariah Park and Ardlethan districts.
