Dairy farmers remain optimistic despite falling prices 27 Oct 2008
Falls in demand for dairy products in developing countries have led to prices falling by around 20 per cent in US dollar terms. The falling Australian dollar will not necessarily compensate for the falling prices with returns dependent upon individual hedging policies says Dairy Australia. However, strong opening farmgate prices are giving dairy farmers confidence in the future of the industry with 90 per cent reporting an optimistic forecast for the coming year according to a survey by Dairy Australia. Dairy Australia''s forecast for this season''s total production is up 1 per cent on last year to about 9.3 billion litres - the first increase in three seasons.
