Rabbits threaten carbon sinks
27 Oct 2008

Landholders need to eradicate 90 per cent of the rabbit population on their farm each year, just to stop numbers increasing says the Victorian Department of Primary Industries. Farmers can no longer rely on calicivirus and must rip burrows, use bait and fumigate said DPI pest management project manager Jason Riethmuller. Rabbits have recovered from calicivirus and have reached a "tipping point" where they are threatening the growing carbon offset industry says the Invasive Animals CRC. Five rabbits per hectare reduced regrowth to zero said the chief executive officer of the Invasive Animals CRC, Tony Peacock. The carbon offset industry may be worth $300 million in Victoria''s arid and semi arid woodlands alone.
