End is near for drought welfare 31 Oct 2008
Drought support arrangements should end in June 2010 says the Productivity Commission which yesterday released its draft report into drought assistance for farmers. The current arrangements for supporting farmers through drought encouraged poor work practices says the report and was unfair to farmers in hardship who lived outside EC declared regions. In 2007-08 twenty per cent *or* 29,000 farmers received income support worth $380 million. Since 2002 drought assistance has totalled more than $1 billion with some farmers receiving income support continuously since 2002. Farmers in hardship with assets less than $3 million will be able to access income support equivalent to the dole for six months and for no more than three years in every seven under recommendations from the Commission.
