NSW Farmers oppose ending drought welfare 3 Nov 2008
The NSW Farmers’ Association has expressed its extreme concern for sectors of the industry and rural communities after the release of the Productivity Commissions’ draft inquiry into Government drought support, labeling it an attempt to force a structural change in Australian agriculture during one of the worst droughts in Australia’s history. NSW Farmers’ Association President Jock Laurie says that the report’s recommendations may have a devastating impact on sections of Australian agriculture and require further consultation with grassroots farmers.
“The recommendations by the Productivity Commission to remove Exceptional Circumstances (EC) drought assistance by June 2010 will leave affected farmers in a difficult position,” Mr Laurie said.
“The timeline of June 2010 does not take into consideration a recovery phase, and with 69 per cent of NSW still in drought, 20 months is not sufficient.
“Government policies need to allow the industry to adjust to the proposed changes.
“The failure of the Commission to recommend an appropriate timeframe for the transition from existing drought policies to their recommendations may make it impossible for sectors of agriculture to make the transition.
“The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Tony Burke, has consistently made a commitment to continuing EC assistance for farmers currently affected by drought.
