More Victorian opposition to Murray Darling deal 13 Nov 2008
Victorian opposition and Greens MPs are pushing for the Murray Darling deal that delivered control of the river system to the Commonwealth government to be scrutinised by a parliamentary committee before it is passed. Liberal MP Wendy Lovell said she wanted to look at the ramifications of the bill on irrigators, communities and businesses. Greens MP Greg Barber said he was concerned the bill does very little to protect the environment. Victoria held out on the deal in the March and was eventually given $1 billion for northern water savings programs. Water Minister Tim Holding said the MPs were playing political games.
