Cotton and trade safeguards hold up Doha
18 Nov 2008

New Zealand''s WTO ambassador, Crawford Falconer says time is running out for an agreement to be reached this year on the deadlocked Doha round of international trade talks. The G20 summit called at the weekend for the outlines of a Doha deal to be agreed by the end of the year. Mr Falconer said there had been no real progress on the special safeguard mechanism -- a measure to protect subsistence farmers from a surge in imports. The United States has also not shown any willingness yet to move on the sensitive issue of cotton subsidies. Source: Business Spectator/Reuters 18/11/08
